Asthma Management
All asthmatics receive quarterly newsletters with up-to-date information about asthma management. All members with asthma also receive reminders about pulmonary function testing and medication usage. Because asthma is a chronic condition that can quickly go from being symptom free to an extreme flare up, recognizing and treating early symptoms is essential. Asthmatics who have not had yearly tests done or who have had to use ER and Urgent Care services, receive additional newsletters with intensive management information.
Monthly asthma education programs will begin in January 2002. The Disease Management Nurse will provide information about asthma treatments, medications and daily management. There will be an opportunity to discuss asthma issues and ask specific management questions. Programs will be for both the adult asthmatic and for the parents of children who have asthma.
Asthma Management Programs Include:
Asthma Basics (overview)
Peak Performance (using peak flow and action plans)
Hair trigger (allergy and trigger management)
Medication Maze (medication and using an inhaler or nebulizer)
Get Moving (exercise and relaxation)
Should I stay or should I go (sick day care)
Check the Asthma Management newsletter for latest class information.
Beginning in 2002, the Asthma Management program will send an annual asthma assessment questionnaire to those members with asthma. Returning the questionnaire will help us focus our educational efforts on members' needs. The results let us know about challenges members face in getting the care they need to stay symptom free. We are excited about using this questionnaire to help form a partnership with you and your physician in your asthma management.
If you have asthma and have not received any information from the Disease Management Program within 3 months of enrollment, please contact our Member Services Department. |
